BIRD WOMAN: Dreams and Freedoms as Spaces of Resistance
Venezuelan artist Sofía Saavedra, recent recipient of the Honorable Mention Award at the Baja California International Triennial, Tijuana 2021, presents in Puebla «Bird Woman, Transmutation of a Flight: Dreams and Freedoms as Spaces of Resistance». This pictorial exhibition features over 20 works in various formats, creating a narrative interplay that frames freedoms as flight, assigning political significance to the construction of human liberties from creative spaces. Through painting, she proposes the importance of stimulating and listening to the oneiric, erotic, playful, and creative realms as starting points for building emancipatory spaces for women.
Her insistence on the natural, wild, and animal world as inherently feminine, intuition in complicity with color, and the theory of metaphor as a site of resistance against systems that reduce life’s possibilities.
The exhibition gathers the artist’s journey narrative from Venezuela to Mexico, creating a kind of pictorial diary or self-portrait where she expresses that Bird Woman is «just a practice of freedom, a personal space of resistance, and a dream of constructing gulps of air to breathe in the world we desire.»
Woman is the theme that unites this exhibition, not sectarianly but as a broad concept linking all humanity. Thus, «the woman» in this show is also the masculine universe.
